JOIN US IN CARRYING THE LEGACY FORWARD

Whether you're a parent, teacher, musician, fan of the blues, or simply someone who believes in the power of community and creativity, we invite you to become part of our journey.

Together, we can ensure that John Lee Hooker’s music doesn’t just live on—it lives loud.

BIOGRAPHY

The John Lee Hooker Foundation is a nonprofit organization rooted in the powerful legacy of blues legend John Lee Hooker, established in 2001 by the Hooker Family Estate. Our foundation was born from the same spirit that fueled John Lee's music—authenticity, compassion, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of the arts. Headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area, we serve communities across California and beyond, building bridges between generations, cultures, and creative expression.

As a family-run foundation, we honor John Lee Hooker’s memory not only as a musical icon but also as a passionate advocate for access, inclusion, and education. We are proud to continue his vision by supporting youth, educators, and grassroots organizations through music and arts programming that uplifts historically marginalized voices.

MISSION

To preserve the legacy of John Lee Hooker by empowering youth through music, education, and cultural enrichment, and by supporting community-based efforts that ensure equitable access to the arts.

We envision a world where every young person—regardless of background—can discover their voice through music and the arts, where cultural heritage is preserved and celebrated, and where the transformative power of the blues continues to inspire creativity, unity, and healing for generations to come.

THE METHOD

At the heart of our work is the mission to ensure that young people from all walks of life have access to cultural, musical, and artistic opportunities, especially in underserved communities. We do this by:

  • Providing instruments and music supplies to schools and youth programs in need

  • Developing a culturally inclusive music curriculum for public schools and community centres

  • Hosting live performances, workshops, and festivals that celebrate Black artistry and history

  • Partnering with artists and educators to deliver hands-on music education

  • Offering grants and funding opportunities to community-based organisations advancing art and education initiatives

Through these programs, we preserve the blues as an American art form and ignite a new generation of creators, storytellers, and changemakers.
