Care & Framing

They require a bit of care to preserve its beauty and longevity. These prints are delicate and valuable, often used in fine art photography. Here's how to do it properly:

How to Frame a Gelatin Silver Print

1. Choose Archival Materials

  • Mat board: Use acid-free, museum-grade mat board to prevent chemical damage.
  • Backing board: Also acid-free, preferably foam core or rag board.
  • Hinges: Use archival photo corners or Japanese paper hinges with wheat starch paste—never tape!

2. UV-Protective Glazing

  • Opt for UV-filtering acrylic (like Plexiglas) or museum glass to protect against light damage.
  • Avoid regular glass if the print will be exposed to sunlight.

3. Avoid Direct Contact

  • The print should never touch the glazing. Use a mat or spacers to keep a gap.

4. Frame Style

  • Choose a frame that complements the print’s aesthetic—simple black or natural wood frames are classic choices for black-and-white photography.

5. Environmental Considerations

  • Keep the framed print in a cool, dry, and dark place.
  • Avoid hanging near heat sources, bathrooms, or kitchens.
